1. N에 = “at/on/in/to place” or “at/on time” in English
Usage:
- 에 is mainly added to the below verbs to indicate the proceeding direction = “to” in English
가다 = to go
오다 = to come
다니다 = to attend/commute
돌아가다 = to return
도착하다 = to arrive
올라가다 = to go up
내려가다 = to go down
- 에 is also added to 있다/없다 to expression location or place = “on/in/at”
- 에 is also added to nouns to indicate time = “at/on” in English

- Year (년/해): 작년에, 올해에, 내년에, 2017년에
- Month (달/월): 11월, 지난달에, 이번 달에, 다음 달에
- Day (날): 10월 15일에, 생일, 추석에 (chuseok - 8월 15일), 설날 (new year), 크리스마스에 (christmas)
- Day of week (요일): 월요일에, 화요일에, 금요일에
- Time (시간): 11시에 (열한시에), 여섯시에, 오전에, 오후에, 아침에, 점심에, 저녁에.
- Season (계절): 봄에, 여름에, 가을에, 겨울에
- Year (년/해): 작년에, 올해에, 내년에, 2017년에
- Month (달/월): 11월, 지난달에, 이번 달에, 다음 달에
- Day (날): 10월 15일에, 생일, 추석에 (chuseok - 8월 15일), 설날 (new year), 크리스마스에 (christmas)

Note: 에 can not be added to the time nouns such as 오늘, 어제, 내일, 모레 (day after tomorrow), 그제/그저께 (day before yesterday)
Examples
1. 다음 달에 여동생이 한국에 와요.
My younger sister is coming to Korea in the next month.
2. 아빠는 회사에 다녀요.
My dad goes to company.
3. 다음 달에 고향에 돌아가요.
I go back my hometown next month
4. 지금 집에 아내랑 아기가 있어요.
My wife and my baby are at home now.
5. 책상 위에 노트북이 있어요.
There is a notebook on the desk.
6. 오늘 오후에 뭐 해요?
- 백화점에 가요.
What will you do this afternoon?
- I am going to the department store.
- I am going to the department store.
7. 민아 씨가 학교를 졸업했어요?
- 네 작년에 졸업했어요. 요즘 회사에 다녀요.
Did Mina graduate from school?
- Yes, she graduated last year. She is going to company recently.
8. 저는 5년 전에 한국에 왔어요.
I went to Korea 5 years ago.
9. 보통 몇 시에 일어나요?
- 보통 아침 7시에 일어나요.
What time do you normally wake up?
- I normally wake up at 7 am.
10. 주말에 시간이 있어요?
- 네, 주말에 시간이 있어요.
Do you have time on the weekend?
- Yes, I have time on the weekend.
2. N에서 = “in/at place” in English
Usage:
- Added to the nouns to indicate the location or place at which action / behavior occurs = “at/in” in English
- Special case: 살다 (live) can be used with either 에 or 에서
Examples
1. 학교에 가요. 학교에서 공부를 해요.
I go to school. I study at school.
2. 식당에 갈 거예요. 식당에서 밥을 먹을 거예요.
I am going to the restaurant. I will have a meal there.
3. 어디에 살아요? - 대전에서 살아요.
Where do you live? - I live in Daejeon.
4. 주말에 뭐 할 거예요?
- 집에서 청소하고 빨래할 거예요.
What will you do on the weekend?
- I will do cleaning and washing at home.
5. 어제 저녁에 뭐 했어요?
- 헬스클럽에서 운동했어요.
What did you do last night?
- I had some exercise at the health club.
