Usage:
- Indicate a habitual action of the present (= often, usually) or past (= used to)
- Often used together with 곧잘, 자주, 가끔
- Not use to describe something that always happens (example 11)
- Not use to describe something that do not repeat or continue to a certain degree (example 12)

Tense:

1. 현재 : V-곤 하다  = often, usually

가다 -- 가곤 하다
먹다 -- 먹곤 하다
공부하다 -- 공부하곤 하다
읽지 않다 -- 읽지 않곤 하다

2. 과거 : V-곤 했다  = used to

가다 -- 가곤 했다  
먹다 -- 먹곤 했다  
공부하다 -- 공부하곤 했다  
읽지 않다 -- 읽지 않곤 했다  





Examples:
1. 점심인데 김밥 드세요?
- 네, 시간이 없어서요. 시간이 없을 때는 일하면서 김밥을 먹곤 해요.
It’s lunchtime, so are you having gimpap?
- Yes, since I don’t have any time. When I don’t have time while working, I often have gimpap.

2. 아침에 일찍 일어나고 운동하곤 해요.
I often get up early in the morning and do exercise.

3. 남편이 집에서 가끔 요리를 하시나요?
- 네, 주말에는 남편이 요리를 하곤 해요.
Does your husband sometimes cook at home?
- Yes, he often cooks on weekend.

4. 이 복사기로 복사를 한꺼번에 많이 하면 종이가 걸리곤 해요. 조금 이따가 다시 해 보세요.
When you try to make a lot of copies at once using this copier, the paper often get jammed. Try it again a little later.

5. 비가 오는 날에는 그 사람이 생각나곤 해요. (=...그 사람이 자주 생각나요.)
In rainy day, I often think about that person.

6. 방학 때는 시골 할머니 댁에 가곤 했어요.  = (..자주 갔어요.)
During school vacation, I used to go to my grandmother’s house in the countryside.

7. 언제든지 고향 음식을 그리워할 때 고향 음식을 만들어 먹곤 해요.
Whenever I miss hometown food, I often cook to eat.

8. 평소에는 건강에 좋은 음식을 먹지만 가끔은 튀김을 먹곤 해요.
I usually eat healthy food but now I eat fried food sometimes.

9. 어렸을 때 방학 동안에 공부를 하는 대신에 하루 종일 게임을 하곤 했어요.
When I was young, instead of studying during vacation I used to play games whole day.

10. 유명한 K팝 가수를 알지 않곤 했어요.
I didn’t use to know any famous K-pop artists (but now I do).

11. 학교 수업은 매일 9시에 시작하곤 해요. (wrong) → 시작해요.
Class always starts at 9:00 am.

12. 고등학교 때 그 가수를 좋아하곤 했어요. (wrong) → 좋아했어요.
During high school, I really like that singer.
